Entry 43 / Publishing business

An author-income survey needs its population.

The Authors Guild’s 2023 survey concerns earnings in 2022. Its medians are useful only when the group being measured stays attached to the number.

The figure and its year

The Authors Guild’s 2023 Author Income Survey summary reports responses from 5,699 published authors. It gives median 2022 book income for full-time authors as $10,000, with median book and other author-related income combined at $20,000. The release appeared in September 2023 and was updated in October. The earning year is neither of those publication dates.

Book income and author-related income are different measures in the survey. The latter can include activities such as teaching or editing. A sentence that drops the distinction makes a writer’s economic life appear simpler than the source describes.

A median is a midpoint

A median divides the reported observations in a group into two halves. It is not a promised wage, a typical contract or an estimate of what the next debut author will make. Separate breakdowns by working status, genre or publishing route describe different populations and should not be casually compared as if only one factor changed.

The practical question is what the survey lets a reader infer. It can describe the responding published authors under its definitions. It cannot supply a complete account of everyone who attempted to write a book, or establish that one route caused a particular income.

Use the number without letting it decide

For a writer planning a project, the survey can prompt better questions about time, other work and the distribution of earnings. A project budget still needs its own costs and circumstances. Do not turn an aggregate finding into a sales forecast for a particular manuscript.

When citing the study, preserve four labels: survey year, earning year, population and income definition. Add whether the source is a public summary or the full report. That small amount of context allows a reader to follow the evidence and challenge an inference without first repairing the citation.
