The reported total
The Association of American Publishers released its StatShot Annual report for calendar year 2025 on 10 August 2026. Its public summary estimates aggregate U.S. publishing revenue at $33.4 billion, up 2.5% from 2024. Trade publishing, the consumer-book segment, is reported at $21.7 billion.
The release also gives adult-fiction revenue as $7.1 billion and digital-audio revenue across the industry as $2.5 billion. Those figures refer to different categories. They should not be placed in a chart as if each were a mutually exclusive slice of the same whole.
The frame changes the meaning
An industry revenue estimate is not author income, publisher profit, retail unit sales or hours spent reading. Each measure needs its own source. Rising revenue may coexist with very different experiences for a particular imprint, format or writer; the aggregate cannot settle an individual business question.
The methodology note says the annual report combines publisher data with other inputs and adjusts its multiyear series for participation changes and restatements. When comparing years, use the series supplied in the same release where possible. A value copied from an earlier announcement may have been revised.
A better notebook entry
Write down five things beside a publishing statistic: the measured year, release date, territory, population and unit. In this case, 2025 and August 2026 serve different purposes. One names the activity measured; the other tells us when the estimate became available.
Then write the inference separately. “The report estimates growth” is supported here. “A debut novel is more likely to earn out” requires evidence this release does not provide. Keeping those sentences apart makes economic reporting more useful to the people who must make decisions from it. It also leaves room for later data without pretending the first total told every story.
Sources & limits
Uses the public AAP release, not the full paid dataset. The figures are the association’s estimates; no sales forecast or author-income recommendation is offered.
