Wholesale Terms Are a Risk Model

A non-prescriptive way to compare discounts and return settings by tracing who pays and what happens after stock returns.

Books and a return parcel sit on opposite sides of a balance.

Trace the route

A wholesale discount is part of the path by which a retailer can acquire a print book. It interacts with list price, printing cost, territory, distributor, and return terms. A returnable setting can create a later obligation when stock comes back. That is risk allocation, not proof the book will be stocked or sold.

Use a worksheet for a hypothetical $20 paperback: list price, print cost, current provider terms, proposed discount, return setting, and what the provider says occurs on return. Preserve an “unknown until confirmed” row instead of inserting folklore.

Model three stories

Trace direct order, retailer order kept, and retailer order returned. For each, note cash, charges, timing, and remaining obligation. The aim is not a forecast but a check that the least pleasant story is understood.

Record the decision

Write the setting, distribution purpose, and provider page reviewed on a date. Revisit after price, printer, distributor, territory, or edition changes. A percentage without its policy is not a decision.

Specific production checks

Use an invoice-sized example instead of a vague margin. If a shop orders ten copies, write what is invoiced, what is printed, what is paid at each stage, and what record would show a return. Then repeat the exercise for one damaged copy and one title-price change.

Ask the provider for current definitions of each setting in writing or save the current help page with the date. A retailer’s willingness to order is a separate question from the distributor’s terms, so leave it as an observation rather than building it into the calculation.
