Make one product brief

ONIX for Books is EDItEUR’s international standard for communicating book-product information. Its value is plain: distributors, retailers, and library suppliers need one coherent account of what a reader will receive. Make that account before fields are entered in several portals.

For a hypothetical paperback, capture title and subtitle exactly as on cover, contributors and roles, language, imprint, date, ISBN, product form, extent, dimensions, territories, subjects, series, description, and rights contact. That brief is the source of truth; dashboard fields are copies.

Separate kinds of claim

A title, binding, contributor role, and identifier are identity claims. A description, review quote, and comparison title are marketing claims. Review them differently. Could a librarian order the precise object from the factual fields? Could a reader understand the promise from the description?

Test the handoff

Compare brief, cover, title page, and retailer preview side by side. Search exact title, ISBN, contributor spelling, format, and date in the receiving system. Save a dated export. When a new map changes the interior, update extent and description together. A later correction then has a starting point.

Specific production checks

Run a contradiction pass on fields that commonly drift: the cover says “second edition,” the description says “new edition,” and the publication date still belongs to the first. Choose the supported formulation, update the brief, and note which partner receives the correction. For an anthology, compare every contributor’s spelling and role against the signed contributor list.

A useful final check is to export the record into a simple table and ask a colleague to identify format, audience, and publication status in under a minute. If they cannot, the issue is often missing structure rather than missing promotional enthusiasm.
