Write the actual choice
KDP Select is enrollment for a Kindle ebook, not a general publishing identity. KDP separates requirements, benefits, cancellation guidance, and Kindle Unlimited royalty information. Its enrollment requirements govern digital exclusivity during each 90-day term; print and audio are separate format decisions. Read current terms before enrolling.
Write: “For the next 90 days this exact ebook is only through KDP.” Then find every other digital presence: another retailer, author site, library platform, or aggregator. Name who will remove each one and confirm it before enrollment.
Use a calendar
Record term start, term end, renewal decision date, file version, territories, and outlets. Decide from an observable purpose: a Kindle campaign, a temporary storefront test, or a wide reader presence. Do not turn a program choice into a promise of ranking, revenue, or recommendation.
Review the exit
Before renewal, save permitted reports, read current policy, and reconcile live listings. If going wide, prepare a clean source package and product brief before time pressure creates divergent editions. Record the choice and its date.
Specific production checks
Before enrollment, search the exact title and author name rather than relying only on a distribution spreadsheet. A forgotten EPUB on an old newsletter download, a retailer listing delayed in takedown, or a library copy supplied through an aggregator needs attention before a term begins.
At the renewal checkpoint, write a one-sentence result against the original goal: “We used the term to run a Kindle-specific campaign” or “we need non-Amazon availability again.” This gives the next choice evidence without pretending a single period proves a market rule.
Sources & limits
KDP terms govern eligibility and exceptions; this makes no outcome claim.
