Classify the correction

Separate a typo, factual correction, safety correction, accessibility repair, and substantive revision. Note where it appears, who verified it, how it changes understanding, and which formats are affected. A replacement ebook file and a corrected future print run are not identical reader experiences.

For a guide with a wrong emergency telephone number, act promptly, update relevant listings, and identify the corrected edition plainly. A missing comma usually needs a quieter production note.

Preserve the version trail

Keep the prior file, correction date, source of the correction, revised file name, and outward records changed. Do not change a cited page or edition claim silently if the correction affects interpretation.

Tell the right people

Notify distributors, retailers, reviewers, or readers only where the materiality and available contact route warrant it. Write a concise correction statement that says what changed without inventing certainty about who already received which file.

Specific production checks

Make a correction threshold chart before errors arrive. For example, classify a wrong chapter title, a misleading statistic, a broken accessibility link, and a changed emergency resource separately. This avoids treating every report as either trivial or catastrophic.

For a correction that affects a cited claim, retain the reporter’s source, editorial verification, prior wording, revised wording, and editions affected. Update any downloadable companion material at the same time, and do not tell a reader their copy is corrected if only future printings changed.

For digital files, retain a release note that identifies the correction without asking readers to infer whether their download has changed.
