A modest claim can be a useful one
A label becomes less useful when we ask it to answer everything. Human Authored is a program about the origin of a book’s text under defined terms. The U.S. Copyright Office’s analysis asks a different question about human expression and protection. Neither is a literary review. Treating these forms of recognition as interchangeable leaves the reader with less information.
My editorial proposal is simple: keep origin, accuracy and artistic judgment in separate sentences. “The author made this declaration” should not silently become “the claims in the book are true.” “This passage is moving” should not become a finding about its legal status.
Criticism still owes the reader a passage
A review earns trust by showing how its judgment arose: a turn in a sentence, an arrangement of chapters, the relation between a claim and its evidence. Even a strongly held view about the use of AI does not remove that responsibility. A verdict based only on a production category tells us little about the reading experience.
This is not an argument for concealing process. Readers may reasonably care about how a work was made. The better response is a precise account of process alongside criticism, so that neither must impersonate the other.
Leave a path for disagreement
A reader should be able to agree with the factual record and disagree with the critic’s response. That separation is one of criticism’s strengths. It invites another reading instead of requiring a loyalty test.
For this publication, the practical consequence is visible labeling: passage study, source-based context, guide and opinion. Those labels describe what work an entry has done. They do not certify perfection. The accompanying sources and limits allow a reader to question the entry at the right level, and a correction can improve the record without erasing every difference of taste.
