What changed
On 2 March 2026, the Authors Guild announced the expansion of its Human Authored certification program beyond the member beta launched in January 2025. Its announcement opens the program to authors whose books are published in the United States. The current program page describes a licensing agreement and identity verification for nonmembers, alongside a public database of certifications.
This is an account of the organization’s program. The Guild is an advocate for authors and the operator of the certification; its claims about the program’s importance should be read in that context.
What the mark says
The certification concerns the origin of the book’s text under the program’s definition. It permits minimal uses such as spelling and grammar assistance. A reader who wants to understand the boundary should consult the current terms and FAQ, not infer a universal meaning from the two words in the logo.
That scope leaves several other questions open. Human-written text may still contain a mistaken fact, a borrowed passage or an unpersuasive argument. A certification does not answer those questions, just as a careful edit does not by itself document every stage of composition.
Keep the declaration attached to the edition
For a publisher, the practical record is the particular title, author declaration, applicable terms and edition. If the book changes materially, the current program guidance should be consulted again. Treating a mark as an indefinitely portable image would separate it from the record that gives it meaning.
For readers, the public lookup is a route to the registered title. It should not become a reason to accuse an unlisted author: absence from a voluntary program does not establish how a manuscript was written. The useful habit is to ask what a claim covers, how it can be checked, and what remains outside it.
