Taiwan Travelogue: keep both names in the record.

Yáng Shuāng-zǐ and translator Lin King won the 2026 International Booker Prize. The announcement is also an occasion to notice how an English-language edition identifies the work of translation.

An award to author and translator

Taiwan Travelogue, by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ and translated by Lin King, won the International Booker Prize on 19 May 2026. The Foundation’s book record identifies Taiwanese Mandarin as the original language and And Other Stories as the publisher of the UK edition dated 5 March 2026. Those details belong together. A title detached from its translator and edition is an incomplete reading reference.

The award’s 2026 record describes the novel as taking the form of a fictional translation of a rediscovered Japanese travel memoir. That description comes from the prize’s account. It is a premise for approaching the book, not a close reading we have independently performed.

The outer frame

A book that presents itself through translation invites attention to its frames: title pages, introductory notes, the stated origin of a document. In this case the actual English translation and the novel’s fictional translation device are different things. Mixing them would make an account of the work less precise.

Readers can begin by recording who speaks in each piece of front or back matter. Is a name attached to the real publication, or to the invented documentary world? The question is useful even before one decides what the device accomplishes artistically.

A better catalogue habit

When recommending the book, include Lin King’s name in the same sentence as the title and author. Record the publisher of the edition in hand rather than assuming every English-language copy has identical packaging. This small practice makes the labor visible and lets another reader find the same object.

A prize supplies a moment of recognition. The lasting work of a literary record is less ceremonial: preserving the relationships among a text, the people who carry it between languages, and the particular edition a reader can consult.
